“Don’t worry, Your Stupendousness.” Teddy jogged alongside Julie, his rifle banging his hip. “He’ll get over it.”

“Teddy, I don’t think she needs your advice on her love life,” Isaiah chided.

The two werewolves kept pace with Julie as she stormed across a cobbled courtyard toward the Queen’s Tower. She was half-blind with tears, and a steady pain throbbed beneath her breastbone.

“I’m just saying.” Teddy shrugged. “She’s, like, super-hot. He won’t stay mad.”

“Teddy!” Isaiah scolded.

“Flash your boobs at him, and he’ll forget all about it,” Teddy went on.

“If you don’t shut up now, I’ll feed you a grenade,” Isaiah snarled.

Julie managed a faint laugh, but her chest still felt like it was being squeezed. There was only one person whose advice she needed right now.

She dragged the back of her hand over her eyes and pushed open the door at the base of the Queen’s Tower. Taking the steps two at a time, she climbed to the second floor and hammered on the wooden door.

“Coming!” Ernesto called from inside.

Julie hadn’t expected him to be home. She wiped her eyes, struggling to compose herself, and the door swung open. Her stepdad had been a balding, bespectacled middle-aged guy a few weeks ago. Now, the muscular young man in the doorway had the good looks of a young Antonio Banderas.

“Julie!” Ernesto blinked. “Um, hi.”

Julie swallowed the lump in her throat. “Hi.”

“You want to see your mom?” Ernesto guessed.

Julie nodded mutely.

“Come on in. She’s in the kitchen.” Ernesto pulled the door wide.

“Thank you,” Julie croaked. She shuffled through the door, and Ernesto rested a hand on her shoulder, then went back to his spot on the couch. He slipped on his headphones and balanced his laptop on his knees.

Grateful that the werewolves didn’t follow her into the suite, Julie trudged into the kitchen. Its large window let in abundant sunlight, joining with the bright reds and oranges of the appliances and cabinet doors to fill the room with warmth. She closed her eyes and inhaled the scent of Rosa’s churros. Instantly, she was a teenager again, returning to a scruffy West Brighton apartment from the crappy public school where Mia Kruger kicked her ass at least once a week.

“Juliaaaaaaaa!” Rosa sang, as she’d done back then too. Warm arms surrounded Julie.

Julie hugged her mother back, burying her face in Rosa’s neck. “Hi, Mom.”

“Oh, honey, what is it?” Rosa stepped back and held Julie at arm’s length. Her dark curls flowed over her shoulders and rolled down to her generous hips, and her pretty features were so much like Julie’s that she felt like she was looking into a mirror.

Julie’s lower lip trembled.

“Don’t say a word.” Rosa pulled out a chair, grabbed Julie’s shoulders, and thrust her into it. “Hold on a minute. Mama’s going to make it better.”

She shoved a mug of steaming coffee spiked with cinnamon into Julie’s hand and added a little plate piled with churros so fresh they steamed. Julie bit into one and groaned with pleasure as the perfect sweet crunchiness dissolved on her tongue.
